He is the owner and founder of Beyond Average Sound, a multimedia and music conglomerate headquartered in Hollywood of Los Angeles, California. He has engineered music for some of the biggest names in the industry such as Lizzo, JoJo, Ne-Yo and Keith Sweat. He is notably one of the best sound engineers in the game. , Jamar Williams aka “Raj Will” is truly a force to be reckoned with. “Go Beyond” which serves as the foundational thought of Beyond Average Sound, means to exceed any negative limitations that anyone tries to apply to you” said Raj in his exclusive interview with LUL Magazine.
Born on October 20th, 1991, in Los Angeles, California, Jamar Williams lived with his mom in the heart of South Central, LA. His family moved around a lot to avoid the crime and negativity often surrounding them. As a true native of Southern California, Raj Will has proudly lived in Inglewood, South Central, Rowland Heights, Rosemead, and West Covina. As a teenager he aspired to become a rapper and spent summers in his cousin’s music studio. Musically gifted, including playing drums, Raj became a member of his high school’s drumline and remained all four years.
After high school, he received the opportunity to play drums for popular singer-songwriter Enrique Iglesias during his performance at the American Music Awards. It was this moment that really sealed his desire to perform. “That was my first moment in entertainment where I was like I’m going to do this” said Raj excitedly. Raj continued to play drums but knew that he wanted to go further. After graduating from the LA Recording School, he took his hands-on experience with audio engineering and began to work at Ne-Yo’s studio as an intern while still teaching and accepting percussion gigs. Raj was promoted from Intern to Studio Manager in a record 6 months. “Ne-Yo is the Smokey Robinson of our generation. I learned from the best engineers and vocal producers in the game''.
Determined to succeed, Raj took matters into his own hands and landed his first major client as a mixing engineer with Fire Hazard Pro. The songs engineered by him have been on TV shows such as “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”, “Bad Girls Club”, and “Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami”. As an engineer, Raj became an independent contractor with Roc Nation, Universal Music Group and Warner Brothers. June 26th, 2021 will serve as a big day for Mr. Williams as he celebrates the Grand Opening of The Mic House Studios. Mic House studios is a black owned Hollywood based recording studio and multimedia compound under the umbrella of Beyond Average Sound. With the tagline of “For Artists, By Artists'’', Mic House studios has truly set the tone of innovation and excellence within the music industry. With a smile Raj stated “It’s going to be a dope experience…. the whole day will be an event with open house walkthroughs, basketball, vendors, drinks, and live performances'’.
With multiple subsidiaries such as The Set Live (live music, art, and events experience) and Interstellar Media (Video & Production Company) Beyond Average Sound also offers The Platform; a subscription-based service for recording studios. The uniquely crafted service offers multi-tiered packages that allow independent artists to have music videos created, receive marketing services, mixing and mastering, original music production, songwriting and more.
As a true representative of Southern California, Raj pays homage to the late and great rapper & entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle; with a mural of him placed at the entrance of Mic House Studios. “He had a great legacy of entrepreneurship and hustle, that’s the heart of LA, the strength of LA, what we embody the most” he said powerfully.
Determination, experience, a strong business acumen and unique ideas have placed Raj Will in a position to continue the journey of motivating all of those around him. As he continues to “Go Beyond” his wildest dreams, he is currently executive producing projects for many artists including Avehre and Britt Love; both of whom are signed to his independent label, Beyond Average Sound. He is also currently working on a project with actor & entertainer Columbus Short scheduled to be released soon.
